The year of 1960 has significance for Koreans since it was the time of resistance against dictatorship and pursuit to democracy. Among the 5 most notable democratic movement that took place in the year, February 28 Democratic Movement was the first that eventually impacted to the rest: March 15 Masan Uprising, the April 19 Revolution, May 18th Gwangju Uprising and June 10th Movement.

The public effort to make February 28 as a national holiday started last February. The committee was made and it had 1 million citizens to sign for their support and held public discussion.

As of now, February 28 is a national holiday, which is marked in red on a calendar. At 2.28 Central Memorial Park, a tombstone was built to show the lyrics for the theme song. The official ceremony was held with president, VIPs, students and other guests at Daegu Concert House. Some of the event include a play, songs and interviews.

Later in the afternoon, high school students marched across Daegu downtown just like it was in 1960.

Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival 2018 (1st Full Moon Festival)

Daeboreum(대보름) refers to the first full moon of the year by lunar calendar. Because moon symbolized prosperity for Korean ancestors, daeboreum day was a meaningful day to celebrate and make wishes for peace and successful harvest in a neighborhood.

Among many rituals and games Koreans do on this day, Daljib Taewugi(달집 태우기, burning a house of full moon) makes the most spectacular scene; Koreans gather together to burn Daljib, which is a large pile of straw and branches so as to drive out evil fate and pray for prosperity.

There are 2 Daeboreum festivals worth checking out this year: one by Buk-gu disctrict office and one by Dong-gu office. You can watch Daljib Taewugi ritual and also other events and performances.

Recreating March 1st Movement

March 1st Movement is one of the most significant Korean’s public displays of resistance against unjust oppression by Japan. The central place for the movement was Seoul and soon it spread to other regions including Daegu.

In Daegu, this non-violent movement continued on the 8^th. People traveled through March 1st Movement Stair to Dongsan Museum. To commemorate the sacrifice and meaning involved with the resistant activity, 1,000 citizens will gather together recreate the scene. They will declare independence and march through the road.

Starlight Cherry Blossom Festival

Opera Universiade

An international collegiate festival, “Opera Universiade”, will take place in Daegu. Vocal music majors from 9 colleges ranging from Kyungpook University to University of Music and Perfroming Arts(Vienna) will perform Le Nozze di Figaro. From March 8 to 10, there will be one performance each day. The opera will be played in Italian by 8 vocalists carefully selected from auditions.

Dead Batteries

Items: alkaline batteries, mercury cell, nicd battery and other batteries that contain steel, zinc, silver or nickel.

Household batteries should be separated to prevent potentially hazardous stuff or/and reuse useful metals. An apartment building usually has dead battery bins at entrances or in the recycling area. If it doesn’t, you can collect and hand them to a district office(동사무소 dong samuso)

Items: unbroken light bulbs

Intact fluorescent lamps should also be thrown away at a separate recycling bin at an apartment or district office. Broken ones should be dumped with general garbage.

A little tip

All district office accept batteries, fluorescent lamps and milk packs (paper) in exchange to new batteries or toilet paper. You can simply bring the disposal to an officer. Depending on an office, there are recycling areas outside a building. You can toss recyclables here as well. The only difference is that no compensation is made

Oversized Waste

Any disposal that does not fit in the general garbage bag should be collected by an agent. Otherwise, fine can be issued.

Electronics

Items: refrigerators, TVs, air conditioners, washing machine, microwaves, etc

People used to get charged to dump an oversized electronic. However, for recent years, electronic companies pay this charge to run their business more eco-friendly. Collecting electronics separately helps reduce an amount of green house gas by 80,000 tons.

Furniture waste is another useful resource that can be used to generate energy, feed animals, etc. Unprocessed wood can even be utilized to make plywood. Therefore, it is important for the city to collect these wastes. Unlike electronics, there is a fee. Damaged electronics are considered a regular oversized disposal, which causes a fee as well.

Seung Youp Lee, Korea’s baseball legend, was officially appointed as Daegu Ambassador today! He has made a number of significant records in the history of professional baseball inside and outside Korea.
