Raising a Dog in Korea | Vet, pet food, pet cafe, grooming, etc!

Big Dog Life in Daegu, VOL 2

A huge concern for big dog owners in Daegu is the quality of life for their LARGE animal. Korean city homes are typically apartment-style and economically compact. This differs from USA options because renting a spacious duplex, or single-family home with a fenced-in grassy backyard, is abundantly available. We are lucky to live in a large, pet-friendly building that has sufficient grass within its grounds for daily outdoor potty breaks at least 3x per day. There’s even room inside for Big Dog playdates!

The next concern is health care. Will my Big Dog receive the same level of care in Korea that is given to the tiny dogs that have grown in such popularity and adoration here? The answer is yes! Shenzi loves going to the local Korean Vet. I am glad for her cooperation to keep all vaccinations current.

Most dog food and medication available in the USA are available in Korea either through your Vet, local Pet Drug House, local Pet supply store, or online. We actually provide Shenzi water from the same purified water source that we use for ourselves. The cost is higher, but it is best for her health!

Not all pet grooming salons will accommodate Big Dogs simply because their bathing facilities are insufficient – so don’t take it personally. And it is not a punishment to be charged more based on the size of your pet. My groomer ended up using an entire bottle of shampoo on Shenzi! Sorry about that!

Other services like nail trimming, boarding/kenneling, and teeth brushing are sometimes offered by the Vet or the Groomer. I actually trim Shenzi’s nails MYSELF. This is our weekly ritual. Puppy pedicure!!!

Now that Shenzi’s health, hygiene, and grooming needs are met, let’s go have some fun!

My husband plays softball in a local foreigner league and Shenzi gets to watch! It is called the Daegu Softball League (DSL) and they play at ballparks throughout Daegu! www.daegusoftball.com

Other DSL dog owners bring their dogs to watch softball too. Big Dogs and small dogs. Softball watching tips: find the shade quickly, keep the dogs leashed, bring poop bags, and supply plenty of fresh water!!

Duryu Park is my favorite Ball Park to watch softball games with Shenzi. It reminds me of a coliseum!

Kamangberr, Dog Café & Play Place, 12-1, Yonghak-ro, Suseong-gu, Daegu

Our latest discovery this month is a dog café that welcomes you AND your big dog. Besides the coffee being very tasty, homemade treats for your pet are available for sale in the display case.

This café has a fenced-in Garden courtyard and two levels of indoor hang-out space for you and your BFF (Best Furry Friend). Expect the 1st floor to be exclusively for small dogs, the 2nd floor for Big Dogs, and the outside area alternating turns between Big Dogs and Small Dogs every 15-30 minutes.
