5 Fav Summer Things TO DO in DAEGU
I often get asked, “What is there to do in Daegu?” Here is MY Summer Top 5:
1. King Kong Course at Hillcrest
2. Hiking new trails at Apsan Park
3. Trying new things with friends: MK Pilates
4. Street Churros at Suseong Lake
5. Watching Baseball at Daegu Samsung Lions Park
1. King Kong Course at Hillcrest, 1003, Gachang-ro, Gachang-myeon, Dalseong-gun, Daegu
Hillcrest is an amusement & ecological theme park set in the mountainside featuring an extensive herb garden, petting zoo, kiddie rides, ziplining, and obstacle course suspended high in the tree canopies. King Kong Course is rated hardest of the 3 offered and has a minimum age of 20 to even attempt it.
The very first obstacle of the King Kong Course is a 30 ft rock climbing wall. Once at the top, there is no room for fear of heights here! Note: because of the way individual harnesses are connected into the safety cable, it does not allow you to pass others, be passed, or go back! So, forward you go!
There are 5 ziplines and 19 suspension obstacles hovering between 30ft – 40ft above the park grounds. You can see families enjoying Hillcrest below, and they can see you; high above them working hard and being brave! There are definitely PHYSICAL DEMANDS to complete this course. It is a great workout in one of the prettiest settings in Daegu. It is not an adrenaline rush like other zipline courses in the USA, but it does have unique challenges breaking up the routine of daily city life. Thanks for visiting!
2. Hiking new trails at Apsan Park, vicinity 43, Yongdu 2-gil, Nam-gu, Daegu
No matter how many hikes I go on, I am surprised at how many more other trails I have yet to explore! Every so often, I ask a brave friend to come with me to explore a “new to me” trail. Because when you hike somewhere new, there is always a chance of taking a “wrong” turn and having to backtrack. Plus, most of my friends are wives, or moms- so picking up children, or getting started on home responsibilities limit our time on trails. My desire is to do an Apsan Park perimeter hike all in one day. My current hikes are 2-5 hours for 4-8 miles of hiking. I would have to build up to it. Who wants to go?
3. Trying new things with friends: MK Pilates, 3, Dongdaegu-ro 54-gil, Suseong-gu, Daegu
I like to think of myself as physically fit, so why would I hesitate going with friends to try a new studio workout? What a challenge! There are sore muscles that I did not know existed previously. But it was so much fun! Never let LANGUAGE be a barrier for exploring local businesses and trying something new. Though I did not opt for regular sessions, it is one of my favorite memories from the past month.
4. Street Churros at Suseong Lake, 22, Suseongmot-gil, Dusan-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu
Suseong Lake is one of our favorite places to walk as a family. There is always a new restaurant or café to try, and the area has a “Boardwalk” feel to it that is very USA. We like goofing off in the telephone booths that simply don’t exist anymore stateside. I know I mention NEW cafes, but I can’t help but ALWAYS visit Street Churros for the best made-to-order fried treat rivaling anything I’ve ever had in Arizona or Texas.
5. Watching Baseball at Daegu Samsung Lions Park, 1, Yagujeonseol-ro, Suseong-gu, Daegu
We enjoy watching American Baseball back in the USA and are thrilled to have a local team to root for while living in Korea. But THESE games are…DIFFERENT. There are cheerleaders, a hype man, a drum man, multiple mascots, and songs the fans sing the entire time the home team is up to bat! It’s a RIOT!
Daegu Samsung Lions Park is a beautiful stadium. There’s a sandbox, ticketed picnic table seating for families, ticketed lawn area for camping tents, strict recycling containers, gourmet pizza, and plenty of interactive exhibits for the big kid in all of us. The season goes through September, so we’ll see you later in the “Exciting Zone.”
