Daegu Vegan Survival Guide: 7 Days a Week

THURSDAY LUNCH – Pineapple Fried Rice at Ayitthaya (formerly known as Ruen Thai)
Ayitthaya Thai & Vietnamese Cuisine, 177-9 Dusan-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu
One day this restaurant had a large RUEN THAI sign on the front; the next day it did not. Same food though!! And am so glad because the other wonderful Thai restaurants in Daegu actually have limited menus. This one has excellent dish variety, and the open kitchen design adds to the atmosphere. A unique offering would be the cashew stir fry entrée as the chefs do amazing things with mushrooms!

THURSDAY DINNER – Tofu Pad See Ew at Hi Thai (closed Monday)
Hi Thai, 70-3 Gongpyeong-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu
This tiny Thai restaurant competitor packs a big punch for many Date Nights, so beat the rush by dining on a weeknight (not Monday). Or…be there right when they open at 5 pm, otherwise you will end up waiting for a table OUTSIDE on one of the plastic stools they have lined up by the window! There are only 3 true Vegan options made to order by the chef: Fried Rice, Pad See Ew, and Green Curry. All 3 are EXCELLENT, and worth the wait on those plastic stools!! Guess what? Portion sizes are small too! Good.

FRIDAY LUNCH - Temple Foods in “countryside of Daegu”
A Temple Foods Restaurant, 932 Samsan-ri, Gachang-myeon, Dalseong-gun, Daegu
I confess. I had temple foods twice in one day. But at two different places!! This first place was similar to a nine-course meal. The sides (adding up to a very full meal) came out a few at a time, and stretched over 60-90 minutes. You’re on “countryside time” at THIS place! Dine on the floor, or at tables.

FRIDAY DINNER – Temple Foods in Daegu city near Bongsan Culture Street (closed SUNDAY)
Bolisu, 137-19 Bongsan-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu
This sneaky gem is tucked in an alley parallel to Bongsan Culture Street. It’s okay if you miss the turn as the area is cute to explore anyway. But seriously- look for this yellow free-standing sign post to indicate where the restaurant entrance is hidden. Ordering temple foods is easy since it’s vegetarian (boiled egg, fried egg, or sliced tamago). I just say “set” and it all comes out at once. Usually, add-ons can be ordered if you know how to ask (bibimbap, nutrition rice, spicy soup, etc). Dining is on the floor.

SATURDAY LUNCH – Ma Po Tofu at P.F. Chang’s in Shinsegae Mall, 8F (Luang Street)
P.F. Chang’s, 149 Dongbu-ro, Sincheon 4(sa)-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu
Weekends and evenings are actually the WORST time to be near any MALL, but I figure you could be there when they open at 11 am, then embark on a delightful afternoon of luxury window shopping. I was surprised to see a decent offering of vegetarian entrees, plus family style sides that are fair game as a meal: wok-charred brussels sprouts, chili-garlic green beans, sichuan-style asparagus, and wok-seared spinach with garlic. White rice, or Brown rice? You get to choose!!

The atmosphere and quality of food at this Daegu location actually exceeds all my stateside P.F. Chang’s experiences.

Lunch Portion of Sesame Chicken

SATURDAY DINNER – New Fried Rice at Tomatillo (closed SUNDAY), plaza next to Daegu Opera House
Tomatillo Mexican Grill, 105-2, Chimsan-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu
Reliable Tex-Mex in Daegu. What they do with cheese is a beautiful thing, but I still manage to have a good time too!

I can vouch for the newly added Sangria and Fried Rice. Adding grilled veggies and side salad is always a smart move. My hubby usually gets the chicken burrito. And he usually forgets that it’s pretty spicy until that first bite reminds him!

We made it through the week, and no one had to settle for boring iceberg lettuce salad! Feel free to call the restaurants ahead of time to confirm current hours of operation, and have your own conversations with the wait staff to determine entrée ingredients.
I do hope your special occasions are super special, and your daily meals a Colorful Daegu delight!
