Daegu Vegan Survival Guide: 7 Days a Week
Being a Vegan in Korea SHOULD be easy. There are farmer’s markets open daily with fresh produce, a predominantly pedestrian population, and cultural roots in farming & communing with nature here. But honestly, it still takes EFFORT! My kitchen is meatless and dairy-free. No seafood, no eggs, no butter, no honey, NO PROBLEM! But what if I don’t feel like cooking?!?
Meat is king in Korea and it is very hard to escape its beckoning aromas from noon to midnight if you venture at all outside your domicile. Meat means prosperity and gathering here. “Beef & Leaf” restaurants provide a cheap and fun way to indoor BBQ. CHIMAC (Chicken & Beer) is the ultimate fried chicken party in your belly (and everybody is invited). So where can a Vegan wife go out, and still satisfy her omnivorous husband?!? Here are some spots for every day of the week:
SUNDAY at NOON – Salad, Soup Veggie Roll at Snowpea (Wednesday CLOSED)
Snowpea Sushi & Rolls, 8, Dongseongno 3-ga, Jung-gu, Daegu
Sunday is a tricky day because many vegan option restaurants tend to be closed. Snow Pea is a blessing to be OPEN this day. House salad & fried tofu Udon soup come complimentary with your order. The soup is my FAVORITE! There is an extensive menu of American-style sushi rolls like the ones back in the USA and that makes my hubby VERY HAPPY.

SUNDAY DINNER – Shabu Shabu at Fall In Syabeu (GREAT for GROUPS with reservation)
Fall In Syabeu (Shabu), 273, Dongdaegu-ro, Suseong-gu, Daegu
Easily found vicinity a curve in the Monorail (Suseong District Stadium on the Yellow Line), this Shabu Shabu Restaurant is popular for multiple-family gatherings on a Sunday night. Limited free parking in front - so carpool! Even though there is no price break for NOT using the raw meat (that you cook in the tabletop vats of boiling broth), the price per person is LOW (and your meat eating friends will appreciate the extras). The veggie/sides fixins bar are fresh with many options based on your mood. Noodles? Wraps? Rice? Meat, or no Meat- this meal is easily individualized and highly interactive.
MONDAY Lunch and/or Dinner – Bahn Mi at Ca Phe’ Saigon (open LATE)
Ca Phe’ Saigon, 65, Suseong-ro 69-gil, Suseong-gu, Daegu
Some nights are tough to get a meal in before 8 pm. Yikes! This Bahn Mi shop offers a filling yet not too heavy Vegan option. Avocados are my best friend in Korea. My absolute best friend. There’s no Pho, but there is a rice noodle dish that is fun to share. Wondering when you would ever need frozen coconut milk? Try it in the Coconut Saigon made with Phin coffee. The Vegan affogato!!
TUESDAY – Cold Buckwheat Soba Noodle Soup at Yobanashi (located in the “rear” 1F area of the DEBEC Plaza vicinity Daebonggyo Station by the River).
Yobanashi Japanese Restaurant, 333, Myeongdeok-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu
I am grateful for this Monorail Pedestrian Overpass Billboard advertising a restaurant I would have never discovered otherwise.
Similar to the Korean mul-naengmyeon, Japanese cold buckwheat soba noodle soup is refreshing to the core. An excellent after workout meal! Plus, the décor reminds of an eatery on the Las Vegas strip. Fun!
WEDNESDAY – Superfood at Pan (Sunday, Monday CLOSED)
Pan, 26, Myeongdeok-ro 64-gil, Icheon-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu
I have been known to have both LUNCH and DINNER in the same day at this restaurant. The menu entrees are so delicious and so diverse, that food burnout here is impossible. Superfood ingredients such as avocados, quinoa, lentils, beets, oats, hemp seeds, mushrooms, tofu, tomatoes, and many fresh green things provide ENERGY for many Daegu adventures. The Chicken Bacon Avocado Salad is MVP.
