Romanization of Korean | Road Guide Signs in Daegu Corrected


To truly accommodate 1 million foreign tourists coming to Daegu each year, Daegu has corrected all road guide sings in each district. Totally 1,056 signs were revised to follow national Romanization guidelines so that the same nouns are spelled the same anywhere on the sign. The following are a few useful rules in the guideline.

1. Nature
mountain, river, lake, hill
HOWRomanization of the entire term + meaning indicator

"cheon" means river in Korean.

Ex)
신천 Shincheon River
팔공산 Palgongsan Mountain

*The meaning indicator can be omitted or abbreviated when written on a narrow space like map.  ex) 신천 Shincheon / Shincheon Riv, 팔공산 Palgongsan / Palgongsan Mtn.


2. Artificial Structures
buildings, harbors, parks
HOWRomanization of name + the meaning indicator

"sijang" means market in Korean.

Ex)
서문 시장 Seomun Market
남덕 초등학교 Namduk Elementary School

*The meaning indicator can be omitted or abbreviated when written on a narrow space like map.
*Exceptions: Romanization of names of bridgesfollows the rules for Nature. Ex) 신천대교Shincheondaegyo Bridge


3. Road & Streets
Road and streets that are called daero, ro, gil(beon-gil) in Korean
HOWName + - + Romanization

"ro" means street in Korean.

Ex)
달구벌대로 Dalgubeol-daero    
진천로 Jincheon-ro
2.282.28-gil    

*Exception: 고속도로 is translated entirely to “Expressway”. Ex) 서해안 고속도로 Seohaean Expressway
